Defy gravity and experience the freedom of flight with this fun, dynamic form of yoga! PūrYoga is the first studio in the area to introduce Aerial Yoga, the practice of traditional Hatha yoga with a soft fabric hammock that is suspended a few feet off the ground. The hammock is used to assist with alignment and provide the immediate benefit of spinal decompression.

The spine and joints are free to achieve proper posture through relaxation rather than effort. With the weight of the body partially or fully supported along with the help of gravity, it’s easier to find the most balanced, unencumbered expression of each pose. Classes slowly progress from using the hammocks to hold a little bit of body weight to holding 100% of the body’s weight. Through Aerial Yoga, the fascia unwinds, the mind quiets, core strength is built, and you will leave the class feeling open, free and whole.

Aerial Yoga can support your traditional yoga practice in numerous ways:

  • Challenging postures such as inversions and deep backbends can be achieved with less effort and strain.
  • Deep muscle releases achieved in the air allow you to explore much deeper stretches in traditional postures on the floor.
  • Common yoga-related injuries caused by overstretching and compressing the lower back are addressed through asanas that strengthen shoulders without compromising flexibility, and strengthen core abdominal muscles without compression of the spine.

Tips for aerial yoga:

  • Wear a shirt that covers your underarms completely (t-shirts work best). Avoid wearing shorts or very baggy clothing.
  • Refrain from the use hand lotion before class. Do not wear jewelry, belts, or clothing with zippers, buttons, gemstones or anything that could potentially snag the fabric.
  • Trim your fingernails and toenails.
  • Avoid eating or drinking acidic liquids an hour prior to class. Having a small solid snack in that time frame is fine.
  • Observe good personal hygiene to ensure the cleanliness of the hammocks.
  • Talk to the instructor before class if you have any medical issues that prevent you from inverting or putting pressure on your skin. If you have a spinal injury or medical condition, check with your doctor first.

Restorative Yoga:
This practice is designed to restore the nervous system and help release deeply held tensions from the body and mind. We use props to support the postures, while gently stretching and strengthening the body. This class is appropriate for students of all levels.

Yin Yoga:
Non- heated
Experience profound stillness and silence with this art form. Physically, Yin Yoga restores and maintains the natural mobility of the joints, primarily between the navel and the knees. Energetically, Yin Yoga opens the body's meridian system, which enhances the body's energetic flow and supports emotional equilibrium. Floor postures are held passively for several minutes in order to access a safe and positive “stress” on the deep layers of the body’s connective tissue. Yin Yoga prepares both the body and the mind for deeper experiences in meditation.
*All levels.
